With more computers in the home today there's a good chance that your child's teacher expects some computer work to be done at away from the school's computer lab. Having working computer hardware is only half of the equation; you'll need software, some of which can cost more than the computer. There are however free alternatives that are file-compatible with the software used in school - i.e. your child can bring home a document that was created in MS Word on his thumb drive, open it in the free word processor Open Office, make edits, save it as a MS Word doc, then open it at school the next day.
